No. The right IP rating depends entirely on your environment. This guide explains each rating step by step, shows you how testing works, and helps you make the right choice for products like a 19mm anti-vandal metal push button.

Part 1: What Do the Two Digits Mean?

The IP code (Ingress Protection) is defined by IEC 60529. Two digits tell the full story.

First Digit – Solids Protection (Dust)

A first digit of 5 means dust-protected – limited ingress is allowed but no harmful deposits. A first digit of 6 means dust-tight – complete sealing. For any serious outdoor or industrial waterproof switch, you need IP6x. The "6" means dust-tight.

Second Digit – Liquids Protection (Water)
